Blown Attic Insulation Los Angeles CA

Should you blow in insulation into your attic or should you lay batt insulation into your attic? You may be asking yourself that question right now. You may have already received a few attic insulation bids from Los Angeles area contractors and are wondering which is the best option. The truth is, the best option is whatever works better for you. Some insulation contractors do not own a blow machine since they can be quite expensive and they may not have the workload required to cover the cost. Its not doubt you've noticed the heat. Its been pretty dang hot here for the past few days. So hot that we come to realize that maybe our homes are not as insulated as much as we thought. So hot and so miserable that we realize that we have to do something to cool this home down! Attic insulation is the easiest and most cost effective way to lower the temperature in your home this time of year. Is it going to eliminate the heat? Absolute not but I guarantee it will help enough for you to notice a big difference. In this kind of heat its difficult to get your home below 80 in most areas but any bit of reduction helps and 80 is tolerable whereas 90 or 95 is not. My house for example is split. Half of my house has a sloped ceiling tongue and groove with no insulation at all. Its an old house and the only way to insulate would be to cover up the beautiful ceiling, so we live with it. The other half has an attic and is fully insulated with an R-30 fiberglass insulation and Radiant Barrier. My house is a testament to the power or insulation. On the uninsulated side of the house it can be as hot as 85 degrees with my air conditioning running full blast all day. The other side of the house is 75-78 and maintains that throughout the hottest parts of the day. While my house is definitely not a case study for energy efficiency due to its age, its a perfect example of how attic insulation can really help your Los Angeles area home stay cool in the summer. We get calls every week from homeowners who are entertaining the idea of insulating their attics and they want to decide if doing it themselves is worth the hassle. Let me get to the point: Its not! I don't say that only as an insulation contractor trying to sell our services but as an experienced do-it-yourself homeowner. DIY, as it has come to be known as, should be done as a hobby and nothing else. If you're doing DIY work to save money then you are sacrificing a significant amount of time to do so. If you are okay with taking three months to paint your house on the weekend instead of hiring a painter to do in in two weeks then you are on the right track. Attic insulation falls into the same sort of dilemma. First off, you're going to pay more for the insulation product in most cases. One of the reasons for this is that most if not all of home improvement stores only stock kraft faced insulation. Kraft faced insulation costs more than unfaced insulation and is completely unnecessary in attic insulation applications. So right away if you're buying from Home Depot or Lowes you're paying more than you need to for the product. On top of that, its typically much cheaper to blow insulation into your attic. Hot Weather and Attic Insulation:

Now that the Los Angeles area is slowly starting to heat up with the coming air of summer you're probably starting to realize that you don't have enough insulation in your attic. Summer and winter are the peak times for the attic insulation industry since it takes a little bit of temperature change for homeowners to remember the purpose of insulation. In the Los Angeles area attic insulation really only comes into play during the peak summer and winter months since the weather in Southern California tends to be so moderate. Over the past few years, the heat of summer has really been delayed until August as the June gloom has been extended into July. The result has been more of a humid type heat as opposed to the more dry heat we are accustomed to.

This week it feels like the heat is getting ready to roll in a little earlier than last year. As I sit here the June gloom is in full effect but my A/C is cranking and even then it feels warm. How does insulation play into this? As we've discussed on previous posts, insulation in your attic keeps the suns heat from entering your home but more importantly it keeps the cool air from you A/C from escaping immediately after it is blown from your unit into the home. Few and far between we get complaints from homeowners who don't feel that the attic insulation they have paid for is working properly. Whenever this comes up we always find that the weather has not heated up or cooled down enough to give a change from the base condition. Attic insulation does not add or remove heat from your home by itself. Insulation is working to keep heat in or out... heat that comes from a heat producing source. So, for example, if the weather is 71 degrees outside and its a moderate day, you're not going to be able to tell the difference between the day you didn't have insulation and the day that you added it to your attic since the temperature inside and out is going to be pretty close to regardless. If, however, its 90 degrees outside you will notice a large variance between no insulation and an attic with R-30 attic insulation. The insulation is delaying the transfer of the sun's heat into the home. Does this mean that on a 90 degree day your home will not be warm? no it does not, but if its 90 degrees outside, it might be 77 indoors. That is a big difference without using an air conditioner. Where the attic insulation really comes into play is when you're conditioning the space inside your home. If you're running an A/C unit with no insulation, chances are the unit will run all day with almost no breaks. The cool air you're sending into the home is quickly being met by hot air seeping in from your attic. This mixes with and dissipates the cool air. By adding attic insulation you now form a layer of separation between the cool air inside your home and the hot air in your attic. This keeps the cool air in your home cooler for much longer and allows your A/C unit to shut off periodically. This down time saves you money and keeps your home cooler.

Attics and other Insulation Applications

Adding insulation to your home can be a great thing. Not only does it increase the comfort of your home but it also ends up paying for itself in the long term. And long term means 5 years not 25 years in the case of standard cellulose and fiberglass insulation applications. So where can you install insulation to really get the benefit? There are only a few places and if you're retrofitting things get a little bit complicated.

ATTIC INSULATION:

The first a foremost retrofit application for insulation is in the Attic. Heat rises and so in the winter heat escapes through your attic. Blowing in or laying insulation into your attic keeps that precious heat you paid for (by way of your heating system) from escaping into the attic and ultimately to the outside of your house. The insulation traps the heat in your home keeping it warmer longer. This keeps your heating system from cycling on as often and thus saves you money immediately. The amount of money you save on your utility bill will typically pay for the insulation you installed within five years on a standard Los Angeles area home. The payoff is not as good as installing attic insulation in a climate zone like Los Angeles but it can nonetheless help keep your house at a more moderate temperature when used in conjunction with attic insulation

SUB-FLOOR INSULATION:

Sub-floor insulation can be installed in any home that is built on a raised foundation. It can also be installed on overhang portions of the home where a second story might have a floor that sticks out farther than the first floor does. Installing insulation in the floor of your home can help if you have hard surfaced floors that get cold in the winter. Installing insulation in the sub-floor can make the floor a bit less cold and more manageable. In Los Angeles Sub-floor insulation is not all that common in retro-fit projects but is done on occasion.

We've spent a bit of time on this site already discussing the differences between types of attic insulation. The debate rages on about cellulose insulation vs. fiberglass insulation vs. spray foam insulation. In previous posts on this blog we've compare all three and noted the simlarities and differences and as I mentioned then it really comes down to what you want as an individual homeowner. In terms of insulating quality an R value is an R value. While the spray foam does indeed give you added benefit of air sealing, its up to your discretion as a Los Angeles area homeowner to decide if the benefit truly outweighs the significant increase in cost. In this climate zone we have found that it probably doesn't make sense, however, to each his own as the saying goes. As the summer heats up here in Southern California, homeowners soon start to figure out if their home is insulated enough. What is 'enough' you might ask? Well as the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How much insulation you want or need is dependent upon how hot or cold your house is... or how hot and cold you want it to be. Like anything, the more the better, however, like anything the law of diminishing returns starts to kick in. Afterall, you can spend a lot of money doing R-60 in your attic, but if you live in Santa Monica, you're probably wasting your money.

The DOE recommends R-30 or even R-38 in your attic if you're in the southern climate zone. If you have an existing home there are a few way that you can add insulation to your home. The first and most pertinent is to add attic insulation to your home. Most heat loss occurs through the attic as heat rises and leaves the home. In the winter, attic insulation traps the heat in the home and keeps your heater from working overtime. Insulating Your Attic Helps You Save Money

Installing Attic Insulation in your home saves you money, its as simple as that. There are different types of attic insulation that you can install but the type of attic insulation is not important when it comes to saving energy and saving money. When it comes to saving energy the R value is what matters. R value in insulation describes the amount of time it takes heat to transfer through the material. R value is a consistent measurement across all types of insulation since it measures time. For example, R-30 Fiberglass insulation batts are about 10.5" thick, however R-30 rigid foam insulation is about 4.5" thick. The foam is much more dense and so can pack the same R value into a thickness that is less than half of Fiberglass. Each type of insulation material has different properties that can be compared and contrasted but R value is really what you're paying for in terms of performance. So if you're looking at different types of insulation and the costs associated with them, remember that what you're really paying for is R value. Unless you're concerned about the composition of the material (for example perhaps you don't like fiberglass) then there is no reason to pay more money for a type of insulation that will give you the same performance as a cheaper alternative.

Different Types of Attic Insulation and How They Work

There are a few ways in which you can insulate your attic. There is the standard thermal insulation you think of like fiberglass and cellulose insulation and then there is reflective insulation like foil and radiant barrier. And of course last but not least a combination of the two.

Thermal insulation like Fiberglass insulation and cellulose insulation work by delaying the transfer of heat through the material. The heat gets caught up in the air pockets between the layers of material. The thicker the material the slower the heat transfers through it. Therefore and R-30 is better and keeping heat out (or in) than is an R-8. R value in simplified terms reflects the thickness of the material. (Side Note: different materials have different abilities to keep heat out. So when comparing different prices and different materials be sure that the R value is the same and not the thickness of the materials.) Installing fiberglass or cellulose insulation in your Los Angeles area home keeps the summer heat from passing into your home as quickly but also keeps the winter heat in your home from escaping too quickly. This slowing down of the heating / cooling cycle allows your HVAC unit to run less, consume less energy, and save you money.

Reflective insulation such as radiant barrier works differently than thermal insulation. Reflective insulation works, as the name suggests, by reflecting the powerful rays of the Los Angeles sun away from your home. Reflective insulation works by keeping heat from entering your attic as much as possible. Made of some sort of foil material typically, the suns rays bounce off of the radiant barrier and back into the atmosphere. This keeps the attic cooler than it would be otherwise which means less heat passes through the ceiling and into the home.

Use in conjunction, radiant barrier can keep the attic temperatures lower in the summer and the fiberglass or cellulose insulation can keep the heat that does remain from passing into your home as quickly as it might without either. We get calls in almost daily from homeowners who are debating whether or not they should hire us to install their insulation or do the attic insulation installation themselves. The most obvious reason for doing this is that it will save the homeowner money since they are not paying for the labor. Its the ever-present galactic battle of the insulation industry: Cellulose vs. Fiberglass - which one will you choose?

Each material has its positives and negatives and although there is plenty of information on the internet, most of the articles you'll read are directly or indirectly written by one or the other industry. Fiberglass manufacturers will tell you cellulose is unsafe. Cellulose manufacturers will tell you that Fiberglass is unsafe. So how do you get the truth?! I suggest reading many different sources and try to stick to real world blogs and the information provided by people who have used the products. As an attic insulation company in Los Angeles for over 25 years, we have experience with both and can give you some stories on both. Ultimately, the insulation is in your attic and once its in we almost never get complaints about it. So unless you're dealing with a respiratory illness you'll probably be fine either way.

In our experience, the disadvantages to Cellulose insulation is that if it gets wet purely from humid air in your attic, it tends to sag and compress over time. Sagging and compressing are the arch-nemesis of insulation. Insulation works by trapping heat in between the fibers of the product. The more air space and thicker the product, the less heat can transfer into your house. As cellulose begins to sag, it tends to lose its effectiveness. This is a long term problem and not something that's going to happen in five or even ten years.

The second disadvantage of cellulose is attic fires. Although you'll see many videos online showing that cellulose does not burn when in direct contact with heat. There are many fire fighters out there who will tell you that it does tend to smolder and make putting out a fire difficult. This factor really doesn't come into play until after your home catches on fire so I'm not sure it should really factor into your decision on choosing an insulation product. The hard truth that we see in the field across the entire nation through years and years of experience and literally tens of thousands of homes insulated is that cellulose has more correlation to attic fires than fiberglass. Because cellulose is more dense than fiberglass, if it is installed improperly or if there is an accidental covering of a can light or electrical box in the attic, the heat from that unit can be trapped and build up. So much so that it can ignite the wood framing over time. There is no website that is going to show you this or prove it does or does not happen. This is simply something that we have observed over time. The chances of this happening are also very slim and tend to be more correlated with homes over 50 years of age.

Fiberglass insulation is typically attacked from the health side by cellulose manufacturers. They often claim that fiberglass is a health risk because of the fibers in the air coming down into the home and being inhaled by the tenants. While there is plenty of scientific studies performed on behalf of the fiberglass industry showing there is no health risk associated with Fiberglass there are certain rare instances where it does affect the home owners or tenants. We have seen it become a problem only in cases where a person has respiratory problems and the fiberglass allegedly interferes with their breathing. Since the fiberglass is not disturbed in the attic, its not a threat of the fibers continually entering the house and being ingested or inhaled. In our experience, this claim should not really factor into your decision unless you have respiratory issues or are decide that the cellulose risks are easier to swallow.

When choosing material for insulating your attic, its best to speak to a consult from a reputable insulation company. Have them visit your house and find out what type of insulation will fit best with your needs. If you're going to be storing in your attic, for example, blown insulation of any kind is not the way to go.

Types of Insulation - Los Angeles Home Attic Insuation

We discussed types of insulation before here but it is such a popular topic that I thought I would touch on it again. While there are many different types of insulation there are only five which really dominate applications in today's homes. If you're looking for home attic insulation and you're in the Los Angeles area, then these are the most common forms you'll find. We'll discuss each and how they relate to the climate we have in Southern California. The main different kinds of insulation are as follows:

1. Fiberglass Insulation
2. Cellulose Insulation
3. Cotton Insulation
4. Spray Foam Insulation

1. Fiberglass Insulation

Fiberglass insulation has been around for 100 years or so. It is made by melting down silica sand much like glass and then spinning it much like cotton candy. The resulting material is very durable glass fibers spun in such a way that air pockets form between them. The thicker the material, the higher the R value and the better it is at stopping heat from transferring through it. The glass fibers are held together by a binding agent. In the past this binding agent consisted of formaldehyde in small parts but recent technological advances have allowed some manufacturers to bind the glass fibers using a formaldehyde free binding agent. This makes Fiberglass insulation all the more ecologically green and smart as an option in your home. In my experience, fiberglass insulation (particularly in attics) has a tendency to hold up better over time. Cellulose insulation due to its nature has a tendency to settle and lose R value. Fiberglass tends to hold up very well. Fiberglass along with Cellulose are the most cost effective choices for insulating your home in a Southern California Climate. Fiberglass attic insulation in Los Angeles can pay for itself in as little as 3-5 years by saving you money heating and cooling your home.

2. Cellulose Insulation

Cellulose insulation like Fiberglass has been around for a long time. It is made up of recycled and ground up newspapers treated with a borate as a flame retardant. Cellulose insulation is cost effective like Fiberglass and has a higher R value per inch of thickness. You will still need to install the same R value in your home but the cellulose takes less to achieve this. Cellulose works like fiberglass in that air pockets are formed when it is grinded and sprayed into an attic. The cellulose insulation is only available in a sprayed form and is not available in batt form like Fiberglass. In my experience cellulose has a tendency to settle more than Fibeglass insulation. Being made up of newspaper, cellulose can collect moisture from the air and overtime get heavy and settle on itself. The result is a diminished R value and lower performance. Cellulose is often considered the greener of the two options because its content is made from recycled newspaper, however, there is no real set fact as to which is truly more sustainable to my knowledge. As I mentioned cellulose insulation and fiberglass insulation are the most cost effective options for attic insulation in Los Angeles and southern california climates and can re-pay for themselves in 3-5 years. You can expect to pay around $0.80-$1.25 per square foot for R-30 blown in application in your attic not including removal of existing debris.

3. Cotton Insulation

Cotton insulation or denim insulation is made up of recycled jeans. The product is relatively new and works similar to how Fiberglass works. It is available in batt form only and is considered a green option due to the recycled content. It is also considered a healthier option for those who have respiratory problems since the cotton insulation tends to be less dusty than cellulose or fiberglass. If you're looking for attic insulation in Los Angeles and Southern California, cotton insulation is one of the more expensive options. It can bee three times the cost of Fiberglass and is much more labor intensive because it is difficult to cut. Cotton insulation should only be considered if you're truly worried about dust levels or you feel it is a greener alternative. From a performance standpoint you do not get any better performance than fiberglass insulation or cellulose insulation and are going to pay much more money.

4. Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is all the rage right now. The spray foam manufacturers have done a great job of promoting the product through home improvement shows on HGTV and other cable networks. It is also far and away the best performing insulation product on the market today. However, spray foam is very expensive and very toxic. The positives with spray foam insulation start with the ability of the foam to seal closed any cavity where air might flow into an insulated space. Air flow can really inhibit the ability of insulation to do its job in a home. Spray foam seals these areas and keeps the air flow out. Spray foam also adds shear strength to the walls its being applied to meaning that if you spray it into your exterior walls, your home is now naturally stronger. This only applies to new construction though and although possible is not easily achievable in a retro-fit application. The problem with spray foam is cost. Spray foam can be very expensive relative to Fiberglass Insulation and Cellulose insulation. In a North Eastern United States climate zone where heating and cooling takes place 10 months out of the year, the spray foam is a fantastic option because it pays for itself in a short time. In Southern California and specifically in the Los Angeles area, spray foam insulation just doesn't make sense. It can take 20 years to re-cooperate the cost given we're only heating and cooling 4-5 months each year in most cases.

In closing, different types of insulation have different benefits and different costs and you need to evaluate your application to see what will fit your needs. Attic insulation in Los Angeles can cost you $1,000- $3,000 in most cases so its wise to make sure that you are getting the best bang for your buck. If you know how insulation works, then you know that there are different insulating qualities in different types of products. Fiberglass and cellulose insulation, for example, works by trapping heat in air pockets in between the respective types of material. These air pockets keep heat from transferring from on side to the other or in essence they slow down the heat transfer. Eventually when all the pockets in the material fill up with hot air, the heat can transfer through to the other side. The time it takes for this heat to transfer through is determined by the R value or thickness. R-13 for example is 3.5 inches thick whereas R-30 is up around 11 inches thick. you can see that it will take heat much longer to pass through 11 inches of material than it would to get through 3.5 inches. The application and direction of the heat also factors in but that is for another time to get into the details.

Radiant Barrier functions completely different than heat absorbing insulations. Radiant Barrier works similar to aluminum foil used in cooking. The Radiant Barrier foil reflects heat back toward the source. So for example, Radiant Barrier installed in the roof rafters of a house reflect the sun's rays back out into the atmosphere rather than letting that heat enter the attic. The Radiant Barrier does not reflect 100% of the sun's rays but each manufacturer has their own claims. Overall, used in conjunction with traditional fiberglass or cellulose insulation, radiant barrier can have a powerful effect on keeping your home cool in the summer. By reflecting heat out of the attic the build up of heat within the attic is much much less. If the heat cannot build up in the attic then it takes even longer for it to pass through the insulation installed in the ceiling. If you have proper ventilation in your attic, then it takes even longer for the heat to build up and transfer through into your house! During this elapse of time, your air conditioner can sit idly by and wait until the heat in the attic finally builds up enough to enter the house and warm it up. At that time the A/C kicks on and cools the house back down... waiting again for that heat transfer to occur.

Here we are again with a gloomy forecast for the next few days. For a geographical area that is threatened by drought we sure have been rained on quite a bit over the past two years. I don't know about you but it makes me wonder how it is that Los Angeles as a whole is so terrible at catching and utilizing rain water and snow run off. Considering this was not supposed to be an El Nino year, and the wetness of this year's winter caught most by surprise, it gets one thinking about the prospects of climate change. We are no doubt witnessing some sort of shift be it short or long term with all the erratic weather we've seen throughout the world over the past couple of years. Add to that the large and devastating earthquakes in Chile, New Zealand and Japan and I don't think it takes much to sense the change. The debate in my mind is the severity and term of the change.

Nevertheless all of this thinking makes us question how small we really are and how confined we are to the whims of our world. No matter how bright or intelligent or strong we might feel as human beings on any given day, the reality is we are merely guests on this planet and subject to a much bigger, stronger, galactic power.

Different Types of Insulation - Cellulose Insulation, FIberglass Insulation, Cotton Insulation, Foam Insulation

R-value is R-value. R-value is a measurement that describes how long it takes heat to pass through an object. No matter what the material is made of, an R-30 value is the same across the board. There are, however, many different insulating materials used to achieve an R value of 30. Each one has its own qualities and particular uses. Foam for example is able to squeeze more R-value into less thickness due to its density. Foam, however, can be much more expensive then say Fiberglass. Fiberglass is much thicker per R but is cheaper to manufacturer. Ultimately you need to select the insulation that fits what you need.

Fiberglass insulation is made from sand. Silicon within the sand is melted down and spun like a cotton candy machine to create Fiberglass batts. The air that is trapped between the glass fibers traps heat and delays it from crossing through the batt. The thicker the batt the longer it takes for the heat to cross and thus the higher the R- value. Fiberglass has been around for almost 100 years. Over that 100 years there have been many tests done to see if there were any harmful effects of Fiberglass in one's home. Over those years all test have failed to find any risk of pulminary disease or any other disease from Fiberglass installed in a home. Contrary to many stories that are out there, Fiberglass is considered just as 'healthy' as any other type or insulation.

Cellulose insulation is made from recycled ground up newspaper. The material is then trated with a flame retardent and then blown into attics of homes using a machine. Cellulose is only available in this blow form and not in batt form like Fiberglass or cotton. Cellulose can be very dusty when blown into the application but generally settles nicely. Although made of newspaper, cellulose manufacturs claim that material is no more flammable than Fiberglass. Cellulose, because it is made of recycled newspaper, is generally considered by the public to be more "green" than Fiberglass. As with Fiberglass Insulation, Cellulose insulation derives its R-value from its thickness. Cellulose has a slightly higher R value per inch than Fiberglass and is generally the same price as Fiberglass insulation.

Foam insulation is made by mixing two chemicals together. There is the rigid type of foam call Rigid Board Insulation and then the blown in kind which is mixed and sprayed into the walls on site. Foam insulation has by far the highest R value per inch and is the best insulator because you can get more material into smaller spaces. It has structural properties too which help it actually strengthen the housing structure. Foam Insulation is also by far the most expensive insulation to install. It can cost upwards of four times as much money as standard Fiberglass Insulation and Cellulose Insulation applications. Depending on your climate zone, the cost of foam insulation can pay for itself very quickly. Installing it in Southern California, however, can take decades for return on your investment.

Cotton insulation is made by recycled and ground up jeans. Cotton insulation is a very green form of insulation since its made 100% of recycled material. Cotton Insulation, however, can be expensive as well costing two to three times the amount standard Fiberglass and Cellulose insulation cost.
